Excavation work keeps on with normality in the La Merced parish of Buenos Aires, Imbabura, after the action of the public force to open the road that leads to this area, which was closed by groups against mining and illegal miners.

A control and recovery operation of the public highway restored peace and let the exploration work of the Imba 1 mining concession, belonging to the Hanrine company, which operates in the area, continue.

Approximately 100 direct employees of this company had lost the opportunity to enter their work since anti-miners and illegal miners groups maintained the road arbitrarily and prevented the passage to Imba 1.

To lift the blockade, the mining company filed a protection action before the Iñaquito Family Unit for Children and Adolescents, in Quito, on July 22nd, 2021.

In the judicial decision, which was in favor of the company, the judge assured that Hanrine’s rights were violated and ordered the Police to guarantee the free access of the mining company’s personnel to the Imba 1 concession.

Since that day, about 270 police officers remain in the streets of La Merced in Buenos Aires, patrolling to maintain peace in the area.

Mining activities resumed while opposing groups announced on social media that they would retake the outcry and seek one way or another to stop the excavation work.

It is worth noting that mining is a strategic sector covered by Ecuadorian laws. Minerals exportations represent substantial foreign exchange earnings to the country and generate thousands of jobs, directly and indirectly, allowing the revival of the economy.
